Lebrun, Albert
(1871-1950)
   political figure
   Born in Mercy-le-Haut, Meurthe-et-Moselle, Albert Lebrun was a graduate of the École polytechnique and became a mining engineer. He sat in the Chamber of Deputies (1900) with the democratic Left, and served as minister of colonies (1911-14), then was in charge of the blockade of liberated territories (1917-20). President of the Senate (1931), he was elected president of the third republic (1932-40) and retired after the armistice and the formation of the vichy government (July 1940). Lebrun was arrested by the Germans and deported (1944-45).
